About Dr. Gerowitz's Gentle Shaping System
The OAA is the leading body of Orthokeratologists in the United States, formed to support, promote and advance Orthokeratology by providing quality education and scientific information on the subject of Ortho-k to all its members. Fellowship status in the OAA is determined by doctor experience and expertise and follows a rigorous case evaluation and testing procedure. Those Orthokeratologists who achieve Fellowship status are committed to adhering to the highest standards of care in this specialty. Dr. Gerowitz was one of the first OAA Fellows in the U.S. IS EVERYONE A CANDIDATE FOR GSS AND CAN ANY DOCTOR PERFORM IT?
Unfortunately, no. It will not work as well for higher levels of myopia (above -6.00) and needs to be done in a very exact and meticulous manner. Dr. Gerowitz has received special training and has the necessary diagnostic equipment to perform GSS. There are no age barriers for GSS. It is safe for children and adults and may prevent further nearsightedness from increasing! WHAT DOES THE GENTLE SHAPING SYSTEM PROGRAM INCLUDE?
Your first year on the program includes a comprehensive vision / eye health exam, an Optomap retinal exam, topography, retainer lens design and fitting, lens insertion, removal, and care instruction; and all of the professional visits and retainer lenses needed to achieve optimal vision for a full year. Program fees are determined by vision correction and will be outline by Dr. Gerowitz at the start of your program. HOW WELL DOES GSS WORK? Not being able to see clearly is not a good feeling. I would know. When I was in kindergarten, I got glasses, and I hated them a lot. I didn?t like glasses because they were uncomfortable, they hurt my nose, and they always got in my way. Over the years, my vision got worse. It was so bad that I couldn?t read the board at school, and I had to hold a book really close to my face to read it. Then one day my mom took me to Dr. Gerowitz. I came home with a pair of contacts. When I woke up the next morning, it was like a miracle. I could see perfectly fine without glasses. Those contacts are not regular contacts. They are worn at night to correct your vision instead of soft ones that are normally worn during the day. Not going to lie, at first I didn?t think I would stay with the program. But soon, I got used to the feeling of having lenses in my eyes and the infections I had with soft contacts stopped. The Gentle Shaping System is really easy to use. Every night before I go to bed, I put the contacts in, and take them out when I wake up in the morning. It is easy to take care of and clean them. They can be stored in a special case with special solution that gets delivered right to your door after you order it online. It takes a little practice to put them in, but my brother started when he was just 7 years old and I started when I was 8. So if a 7 year old can do it, then anybody can. As far as other options for correcting my vision, the Gentle Shaping System is the perfect solution. During the first semester of the school year, my gym class did a unit on swimming. Many of my classmates worried about their contacts falling out in the water, or not being able to see anything without their glasses. Some of my friends complained about how they ran out of their supply of disposable daily contacts, so they had to wear glasses to school. Laser surgery is another option, but I don?t think I would do it. Just the thought of it scares me. There are many complications, and I wouldn?t risk my ability to see. Convenience isn?t the only benefit from GSS. It is possible that with the continued use of them, they could stop nearsightedness from progressing. Glasses will just get thicker every year without them. It is more difficult for people with worse vision to have success with regular contacts, so stop the progression now before it?s too late. I know that doing the Gentle Shaping System is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. Start this program now. It will change your life! J.Z. 5/09
About Our Other Services
In addition to our fine optical services and treatment of Optometric Medical problems, Dr. Gerowitz specializes in advanced contact lens designs. Every year new contact lenses debut on the eyecare scene. Each new product has the promise of handling basic and not so standard vision problems. At our office we custom fit every patient with the contact lens product that meets not only their vision needs but also their lifestyle needs. We also have the ability to use specialty lens products that allow for the fitting of custom made contacts which can correct virtually any visual error. All your vision needs and lifestyle lens options are discussed as part of your pre-exam consultation with Dr. Gerowitz; it is in this way that he meet those needs as well as your desires. For Our Hearing Impaired Patients: Starting with the last year of his Optometric internship, Dr. Gerowitz has provided Chicagoland's Deaf and Hearing Impaired population with the same high level of care he gives to all patients. By becoming proficient in Sign Language, Dr. Rob has once again "raised the bar" in the area of Specialty Eye Care Services. We recognize that hearing impaired patients require clear vision not only to see their world, but to communicate with it as well; so our office has brought eye care for deaf patients from the writing of notes to Total Communication.
